Origin: Turkey | Manufacturer: Baykar Defense
Role: Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) ISR/Strike
Overview:
The Bayraktar (translated as “flag-bearer“) TB2 is an aptly named medium-altitude, long-endurance drone developed by Turkey’s Baykar Defense, designed for tactical ISR and precision strike missions. Compact and affordable, the TB2 has seen extensive combat use in Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Ukraine where its symbolic role often outstripped its tactical effect in high-threat environments. With an endurance of 27 hours and a lightweight munitions load, it carries MAM-L and MAM-C laser-guided bombs and is capable of persistent surveillance over contested ground. The TB2’s operational success has made it a linchpin of Turkish defense diplomacy, exported to over two dozen countries, and adapted for maritime surveillance and joint strike roles. Some of these nations include: Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Poland, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Albania, Niger, and possibly more.
The Bayraktar TB2 stands as a defining system of 21st-century drone warfare not due to technical superiority, but because of its strategic ubiquity due to mass production and narrative potency. Gaining a kind of fan club if one could call it that, the TB2 is an ideal representation of many factors for success of a middle power looking to enter the global drone market. To further increase appeal to potential buyers, TB2 is often exported with comprehensive training and munitions packages. Predictably swept aside easily by any organized air defenses, the TB2 is still likely to continue to feature in low-intensity conflicts for the rest of the 2020s.
