UDS Aviation occasionally uses imagery sourced from the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) to illustrate coverage related to U.S. military operations, aerospace systems, and global defense trends. DVIDS is a publicly accessible platform maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) that distributes official photos, videos, and documents for unrestricted use by the public and media outlets.
Why We Use DVIDS Imagery
We select DVIDS imagery when:
- It offers unique visual documentation of aerospace platforms, military logistics, or operations that are not available from commercial sources. Covering defense UAS is nearly impossible otherwise.
- It helps contextualize defense-related news, particularly in coverage involving U.S. or allied force structure, deployments, or systems like the MQ-9 Reaper or RQ-4 Global Hawk.
- It serves the public interest by visualizing taxpayer-funded programs for better transparency, providing understanding and context as part of the broader UDS Drone Studies Initiative.
All imagery sourced from DVIDS is clearly credited and falls under public domain use guidelines as defined by the U.S. government. Below is the exact phrasing specified in the Copyright Information section of DVIDS, drawn from DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 1. It must be displayed when DoD imagery is used in a manner that could be perceived as commercial, or to reinforce that there’s no endorsement implied.
“The appearance of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) visual information does not imply or constitute DoD endorsement.”
Editorial Independence
UDS Aviation is an independent aerospace data intelligence firm. We are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense or any government agency. The use of DoD imagery does not imply endorsement or coordination with the U.S. military or any of its branches.
Our editorial policy is guided by our own standards of transparency, strategic clarity, and independent analysis. Where DVIDS images are used, they are employed for illustrative and analytical purposes only, consistent with public access provisions and fair journalistic practice.
Disclaimers and Image Credit Policy
- All DVIDS-sourced images are credited directly on the page where they appear.
- We maintain individual image disclaimers stating their source and public domain status. Information from DVIDS is usually contained in the description section of the image.
- UDS does not alter DVIDS imagery in a misleading or deceptive manner. Any edits (e.g., cropping or formatting for layout) are purely cosmetic or decorative purposes and do not change the context of the image.
